Commitment
Tine 2.0 is open source and will always be! We strongly believe in the power and quality of free and open source software.
We are convinced that software becomes best in open source projects where hundreds of expert eyes review the source code.
We know for sure, that giving away Tine 2.0 for free, is the best thing to spread the software we like around the globe, helping companies and individuals to ease collaboration.
In our eyes, open source in the IT sector means what fair means in trading business and bio in agriculture. Exactly this spirit, of being committed for a collective, makes collaboration successful and is therefore the perfect ambit for a collaboration software.
Fully Featured Versions
Tine 2.0 is Tine 2.0 is Tine 2.0!
There are vendors who distribute pared-down versions of their closed source software as bait fishes.
In contrast to those offers, Tine 2.0 is not meant to sniggle customers for a fully featured version. Tine 2.0 itself is the main product.
Licensed under the AGPL V3
Tine 2.0 is licensed under the AGPL v3.
This is the most free license for web applications out there. It's almost the same as the well known GPL, but it comes with one extra paragraph which ensures that the principle behind most of the free software licences is adhered to in a web service context.
Spoken roughly, the GPL commits people distributing modified versions of GPL software, to also let the modificated version be GPL and as such be available in source for it's users.
However, in a web applications context, the software itself is not distributed. As such, it's legal to provide services with a modificated version of a GPL software, without giving back the modifications and enhancements to it's original community. For sure, such scenarios are in contrast to the idea behind the GPL.
The AGPL license closes this gap and is therefore perfectly sweeted for an open source web application.
