"Maischa" (2011-05) is Ready for Production

- Integration of third party applications (“Apps”)
-...

"Tine 2.0 – Open Source Groupware and CRM” releases its new version "Maischa" (2011-05)

Hamburg - 2011/06/21

The Tine 2.0[1] project released its next major version "Maischa" (2011-05).
Packages for public download[3] and an online demo[2] have been deployed on the project page.
Focal points of this version are:

Integration of third party applications (“Apps”)

Usability enhancements

Admin facilities

In total the Changelog[4] lists more than 160 new features and improvements.

- Third party Applications -

For the first time it's now possible to easily integrate third party applications, which are not part of the standard distribution. Seamless integration of the user-interfaces can now be done, without deep knowledge of the internal structures and without the need to recompile the core.
On the client side, applications are done by the well known web technologies Javascript, CSS and HTML. Due to the strict Client-Server Architecture of Tine 2.0 no special technologies are enforced server-side. But the standard Tine 2.0 Server infrastructure can be used of course.
Moreover app-developers now have the capability to dynamically extend the user-interfaces of the core applications themselves. A third party app can add a custom tab pane in the address dialog for example.

- Usability enhancements -

For a more enjoyable user experience the overall performance of the system was optimized. Most notably normal users with strict rights restrictions will profit from this efforts.
A lot of detail enhancements could be achieved in the user interfaces and workflows, thanks to the feedback of the continuous user surveys the project does. A lot of shortcuts and inter-application links got introduced as well. For example a new appointment with a given set of attendee could now be created directly from an Addressbook selection. All core data views now reload their data in background regularly, so there is no need to refresh the calendar view on a normal work day for example. Also the Addressbook and Email interactions got improved further to allow more efficient mass mailings.
Power users will be glad to find a new option for defining their server-side emailfilter[5] with regular expressions. Umlaut domains which get more and more famous are now supported by the email client.

- Admin facilities -

The interface of the administration module got a brand new generic folder management section. With this not only system folders could be managed, but also personal folders, e.g. a certain personal calendar of a user. This was a frequent administrator request and will ease the help desk work a lot, as for example grants of such folders can be re assigned from there graphically without the need of special command line tools.
Starting with this new version, Debian[7] and Ubuntu[8] packages are now available from a packages mirror[6]. This guaranties up to date Tine 2.0 packages without the dependencies to a certain distributor release.
